Java

Im trying to get Jedit (Java Edit) to run on my computer. I can get it to run, but when I try to open a file or save a file the program dissapears. Task manager has it as still running, but its no there on my monitor.

Any help? Oh and im learning the enormity of trying to convert The Way to ANY programming language. The fact that Lun C made The Way on RPG Maker 2000 so well astounds me at all the technical details he had to know and the patience........

My first advice, don't use whatever it is you're using, use Eclipse (Classic or the top two IDEs should work, though EE is probably unnecessary). My second advice, and this is the only time you'll ever hear me say this, but use Linux if at all possible when developing. The JRE has an ugly tendency to get into nasty memory squabbles with Windows-based platforms, especially Vista.

Good luck working with the language. I've been doing it for three years, and it's what my current job involves, and graphics programming still makes me tear my hair out. I don't know if you're learning it as part of a formal education or not, but the API is pretty much impossible to get by without. I'm not familiar with any big online tutorial sites (the API has some), but don't waste your time on those "Java Game Programming" books. They're gigantic crocks that gloss over details and present a very esoteric game design process/philosophy. Same goes for those "Learn in 10 days" books. The only book I've found useful is this reference book, but it has lots of the same stuff as the API so check it out at your own risk.

I agree with Eclipse comment. It's one of the better editors out there. Linux, not so much. Unless you already use Linux, installing a distro and learning to use it will take a while. If you are going Linux, I recommend Fedora. Or Debian, even.

I'd like to learn C++ and maybe re-learn VB if I have the time.

I have Windows XP Home and I cant change that for now since its the "home" computer at my house. Im getting a laptop this summer which comes with Vista so installing Linux or XP Prof. will be the first thing I do. Though I have dealt with Red Hat and liked that OS of Linux.

Heres the specs on my "home" computer.
P4 2.20Ghz
512mb ram(need to upgrade to 1gb)
800mhz front bus
cache ??? forgot
256 mb dedicated graphics card. forgot name 400mhz?
Runs F.E.A.R. on medium?
Benchmark I have no clue.
Its been so long. I can easily max it out with Super or Nero so im counting down the days until Im allowed to buy a laptop. Newegg and Tigerdirect X are your friends :!:

I recently bought a Packard Bell IMEDIA X2416

Specs:
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8200 2.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB Cache
4.00GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7100/NVIDIA nForce 630i Intergrated RAMDAC 1529MB
640GB SATA HDD
Dual Layer DVD RW
20" TFT (part of the package surprisingly)
It came with Norton 360 and a trial version of Office 2007.

But, alas, it has Windows Vista Home Premium, but on the plus side, Direct X 10.

Apart from the mediocre/average graphics card, it is pretty good.

My system:

Intel® Core™2 Duo E8600
8GB Corsair 800MHz
250GB SERIAL ATA II HDD
512MB GEFORCE 9800GTX+

Kinda the opposite of what Sling has going on I guess.
I chose a Dual Core because as you know a while back, less than a handful of games even used all four cores.
That's all changing very fast though.
From what my barber told me, I now knew that nothing was real.

What Operating System actually recognizes 8 gigs of RAM on a PC?
Edit: Apparently Windows Vista 64-bit does.

Heres the specs of one laptop Im looking at to buy for Newegg.

AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-82 2.2G
2MB Cache (sucks want 12mb up, but not bad for laptop.)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 1024MB (unfortunately newegg doesnt list GPU speeds)
DDR2 667 4GB
8X DVD-Super Multi Double-Layer Drive
Read: 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-R, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD-ROM, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD+R, 6X DVD-ROM DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD+R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-RW, 6X DVD+RW, 5X DVD-RAM
Write: 24X CD-R, 16X CD-RW, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD-R DL (double-layer), 4X DVD+R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-RW, 8X DVD+RW, 5X DVD-RAM
(the reason I list the optical drive is b/c I learned the hard way between DVD- and DVD+.

320GB 5400rpm

16"

The only "bad" things about this laptop are that, 1 When it maxes out it hits 73C :!: 2: It comes with Windows Vista 64bit which has been notorious for crashing though I want to mess around with it before I put another OS on.

Ok back to subject. I have Sam's teach yourself Java 2 in 21 days. It does skip over stuff, but its the only book I could find. Its from 2004 so the programs that came with it are outdated. Besides the latest Java enviroment what other programs should I download to get started on learning the language indepth?
