Lag from disco lights in episodes 5 & 6

The disco light effect seems to cause an insanely huge amount of processor usage (maxing out a single processor core to achieve less than 1fps) strictly during episodes 5 and 6. However, it works perfectly in episode 4.

Does anyone have any insight as to why this might occur, or know of a fix?
