English 101: The Way

Postby VileHand » Tue Jun 07, 2005 10:57 pm

Below, I’ve compiled a list of various grammatical or spelling-related errors in each of the five episodes of The Way. I realize that such errors are to be expected with a project of this magnitude; however, I hope Lun will take action and correct them in the not-so-distant-future in an effort to make The Way one of the most polished RM2K games on the planet! :D

Each section has a description of the area or scene in which the error was found, the original unedited sentence, and the edited sentence with the correction(s) highlighted in red.

Excellent post, Lun will love this as he's always looking to polish up every aspect of his game series.

It belongs in the bugs forum though, but I'm sure one of our friendly neighbourhood moderators will move it there :)

Shouldn't that be: Dransel: “You’re fresh from the outside aren’t you? There aren’t any 'commanders' among the Blood Lyn.”

Oh yeah,

"Aren't no", while a double negative and thus pretty damn stupid to say, is dialect. As is the lack of a "there". Although if you put a "there" in, "ain't no" would sound better...

Man, if you were picky on language, there should've been a MUCH bigger list of mistakes...

War, Haha. :D

Quite the contrary. The Way is one of the most error-free RM2K games I've seen for the last couple of years. Especially considering the amount of time it takes to develop a project like this, it is natural to have a few mistakes here and there.

Ah well, such is life I guess...

What amazes me is when people post corrections to typos that ARE THEMSELVES WRONG!

VileHand wrote:After Strata steals Dippy and wounds Rhue
Wes: “Looks like it's going to rain, we better get move on.”
Wes: “Looks like it’s going to rain, we better get a move on.”

It actually should be: “Looks like it's going to rain; we'd better get a move on.”
(That's a semicolon added, and we --> we'd.)

VileHand wrote:After knocking out Rhue (Lide)
Kloe: “Now please leave this premis.”
Kloe: “Now please leave this premise.”

It is possible in this case that the error is Kloe's, not Lun's, but the correct version of this sentence is: “Now please leave these premises.”
(A reference to a location in this fashion must use the plural, “premises,” not the singular “premise.”)

VileHand wrote:On the balcony of Rhue’s hotel room after Serena flashback (Estrana)
Lexus: “I’ve got to get ready my match now. You’re going to watch me fight right?”
Lexus: “I’ve got to get ready for my match now. You’re going to watch me fight right?”

“I’ve got to get ready for my match now. You’re going to watch me fight, right?”
(A comma goes before the interrogative interjection at the end.)

VileHand wrote:After killing two Young Blood Lyn’s and one Regular Blood Lyn (Estrana)
Slade: “Rhue, you should know you’re match against Hadar, the guided rep has been cancelled.”
Slade: “Rhue, you should know your match against Hadar, the guided rep has been cancelled.”

“Rhue, you should know your match against Hadar, the guided rep, has been cancelled.”
(The comma that belonged after "rep" was missing.)

VileHand wrote:After saving Kloe from the Lyn (Estrana)
Lexus: “Rhue, I’ve to get going. Something has come up.”
Lexus: Rhue, I have to get going. Something has come up.”

This one was more likely supposed to be: “Rhue, I’ve got to get going. Something has come up.”
(The word "got" was added--to the original, not modified text.)

Thanks for your input DSOK, although the last one you mentioned could be argued either way.

It should be noted that there were numerous errors I did not write down because some of them felt trivial at the time. For example, "we're" when it should have been "were", and "you're" when it should have been "your".

You should probally pm or e-mail lun and he may make the changes if he has time but you never know, too make it easier for him try and include the exact part of the game where the typo(most likely) has happened. This would help out the game greatly

I don't think it's an absolute necessity for the characters to speak in perfect grammar. For example, I think things like "we better get a move on" are all right, simply because it's possible to say them and they sound ok when spoken. "There aren't no" is also fine, because, well, I can see it being said.

Things like "your" in place of "you're," and, of course, spelling errors, should always be corrected, though. It is a physical impossibility to spell things wrong in everyday speech. It's impossible to say "so your really going to do it," because it's interpreted that you're saying "you're."

Then there's the random stuff like "Blue Scarve" and how it should be "Blue Scarf," but I think anyone would agree that "Scarve" sounds a lot more dangerous. Haha i am teh blu scarf!11

As far as fixing grammatical errors goes, it should be done. Everyone who comes to this forum is obviously here because they agree that The Way is a great game. We might as well do what we can to make it as flawless as possible. Some people are blessed with the ability to type without grammatical error, but who can fault Lun for messing up a few times when typing up the volumes of text that went into The Way? The point isn't to complain about how awful Lun is at doing his job (see The Way), it's to make the full experience of the game as flawless as possible in every respect.

i totally agree about the grammar thing infact we had a huge decusion about this in "all episodes:spelling and grammar" I beleive which is now locked. spelling is needed but i dont think many people notice, but still if anybody does notice its kinda bad and there like :( tisk tisk tisk but we need people to find the spelling errors and put them in a topic like this.

My thoughts exactly, Jabbo.

This may be a little off topic, but since we're on the subject of "errors", I noticed that the Point Bender pattern lists Poison Filter at 60%, while in the flow menu it is at 70%. Anyone else notice this?
