I really don't think you can contest this fact with any RPG.

All full-on Rpg's have some form of experience points. All of them. And I'm not talking about games that are Adventure/Rpg. I'm talking games literally called Rpg's. Nobody says, "I was just playing Zelda 64. It's an awesome Rpg."

Hmm...Resident Evil is a really good game. I'd base that as Adventure/Strategy. Strategy because you don't have a place where you can just reload your ammo. Throughout the game you can only have so much ammo. Only so many recovery items too. Oh, sorry. Went off on a tangent there. I was playing it yesterday. :)

But yeah, experience. The essence of RPG.

Oh yeah. Squaresoft.

Wait, haven't I been hearing "SquareEnix" on commercials lately?

Squaresoft, just for their early innovation. Lately they've been shitting a brick.

Sadly, you've limited this to the companies that produce them, not the actual development teams. My favorite games are Xenogears, published by Squaresoft, and Xenosaga, published by Namco. Both games were made by Monolith Soft though, so that is where my vote goes :). Hopefully Baiten Katos (Spelling?) will be as good as their previous work.

Excell, I don't know where that was from (probably GameFAQs or something), but it's not the final word. No web site can indefinitely define a genre.

I've played an RPG without experience points or levels. So what made it an RPG? Well, firstly, despite them being invisible, there were attack power and speed stats. There was also a visible HP stat, which I think is part of any RPG. Hearts =/= HP. There was an ATB-like battle system, and you selected commands to use attacks and magic.

Adventure games are in full real-time, with no battle screens. Secret of Mana is an RPG because it still has every single other element of the genre.

Yes, SquareEnix. Square was losing a ton of money and got bought out by Enix.

Hmmm

Square: SoM, CT and Brave Fencer Musashi (Sorta RPG)
Enix: Dragon Warriors
Namco: Tales, though I haven't played many of them (only Phan)
Nintendo: Paper Mario, SuperStar Saga were both awesome, but VERY basic RPGs
Capcom: Breath of Fire series.
Konami: They made RPGs?

Weighing my options, I'd have to go with Enix. Dragon Warrior games kick ASS! Followed closely by (yes) Nintendo because their few RPGs were excellent ones.

For the last time. Konami has made the greatest RPG series to ever be made by any company in existence. Suikoden. The series is absolutely amazing. I can't describe how good it is.

I had to include Zelda as an RPG because a lot of people consider it to be an RPG. If you don't think it's one then think of Nintendo for SMRPG.

Nintendo makes RPGs? Well, other than Mario RPGs, not really.[quote]

It is really just an Adventure game, and if you say it's an RPG, than so is every other Adventure game.

Zelda is an RPG. RPG stands for ROLE PLAYING GAME. Taken literally, that means if you play a role, the game is an RPG. Of course, there are more qualifications. (mainly a complex story with an evolving character.) An RPG is essentially an interactive piece of literature. And, as many of the newer Zelda games have a deep(er) storyline than most other adventure games, I am compelled to place them in the RPG category. Also, Square pretty much MADE RPGs famous, and all new RPGs are judged against Square's formula. Sadly, many people (hopefully no one in these forums) think that any RPG without major stat functions, magic, an ATB or any other Square-esque battle function, and insane monsters is not worth playing. Still, I like Zelda, but it is Chrono all the way. GO SQUARE!

Okay then, every game except for Puzzle games are RPGs, by your definition.

And fuck Square, there's Enix as well, and any company that has made an RPG since then. The fact is, Zelda games have no elements of an RPG at all. A story does not make a game an RPG, especially since most games have at least a fair bit of story now.
