Is there a reason ...

... why The Phantom would steal the purple suit or was it a random plot device?

I believe it is deeply symbolic, the seamstress representing Lun.

Well, "The Painting" is Lun's avatar, so I dunno.

It's fairly simple, even though debate exists.
The Phantom is Lune, and the painting symbolizes The Way.
Originally The Way was "whole" and all aspects of the plot were clear.
Then Lun took out things, and we got The Way as it is today, difficult to understand, something that makes us think. Lun feels that it is better this way. Thats the most accepted theory.

The phantom and the seamstress both represent Lun . . . Wait, when I think of it, did we ever see the two in the same place in the same time?

Meh, late night posts are never logical, stop complaining.

Yes.

Now that leaves one question... who is Lune?

I want the complete picture, seriously. It just seems right now like a story that pretended to be insanely complex, when at least half of the mysteries and subplots went absolutely nowhere and just made the story seem better than it was. Of course, I know Lun is better than that and there really ARE answers to everything, but there's no way for us to work them out.

I kind of agree Impy... I mean, we can theorize all we want, but what's the point if there's no way of knowing if we're even on the right track?

There is a "Solution."

I really don't think "the seamstress" represents Lun at all.

True enough, that was a dumb idea I had at the time,
Fitz stealing a suit and all . . .
