Attempt at identifying the meters of the tomb poems

Postby Ghoti » Thu Feb 09, 2012 9:59 am

It doesn't look like anyone else has tried this, so I thought I would just for fun. Those of you who still lurk here (all two of you), if you disagree with anything, please say so. If you feel that this aids interpretation, share your thoughts

This took way longer than it should have.

Underscores denote a stressed syllable, hyphens an unstressed. Poems themselves are bolded for easier reading. Poems are in the order they appear in the tomb from left to right.

"The Mimic" by Kleunwrade

One who stole their names,
_ - _ - _
[trochaic, but ending with a stressed syllable; similar to William Blake's poem "The Tyger," which is appropriate, as the poem is often read as a meditation on evil. should also be stated that Blake was both a poet and a painter, much like Kleunwrade]

The child of Janwen's bane. [assonance]
- _ - _ (-?) _
[iambic trimeter]

Darkness, shadow, death.
_ - _ - _
[same as first line]

As long as it has breath. [rhyme]
- _ - - _ _
iamb pyrrhic spondee
OR anapest + stressed syllable?

"Venge" by Kleunwrade

Scar upon the father's brow
_ - _ - _ - _
[iambic, beginning with a stressed syllable, similar to certain lines from "The Tyger"]

Left by son, the disavowed [assonance]
_ - _ - _ - _
[same as previous line]

The shadowed depths below forsaken
- _ - _ - _ - _ -
[iambic, ending with an unstressed syllable]

Enter now our world, thy haven. [final syllable rhyme]
_ - _ - _ - _ -
[trochaic tetrameter]

[beginning of a second stanza?]
Fading into the night,
_ - - - - _
trochee pyrrhic iamb
OR dactyl anapest?

The scourge of fear, the blight. [rhyme]
- _ - _ - _
[iambic trimeter]

Upon this land beneath the sky.
- _ - _ - _ - _
[iambic tetrameter]

Echoes of the past decry. [rhyme] [leads into title poem]
_ - - - _ - _
trochee anapest iamb

"Kura" by Kleunwrade

Legend of the fallen world,
_ - - - _ - _
trochee pyrrhic cretic
OR anapest iamb
OR dactyl iamb iamb [i have no clue]

Betrayed for lust, a plan unfurled. [rhyme]
- _ - _ - _ - _
[iambic tetrameter, thank god]

First to right a single wrong,
_ - _ - _ - _
[see first line of "Venge"; second to last word sounds more like a trochee, though?]

Then revenge, The Guided strong. [rhyme]
_ - _ - _ - _
[same as previous line]

Title Poem (by Lun Calsari?) (using capitalization and punctuation from the title screens, differences being that, in the tomb's poem, only the first letter of each line is capitalized, and it ends with a period) (in the tomb the poem is untitled and gives no author) (episode titles forming a poem is similar to the novel If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino where chapter titles form a sentence) (i honestly have no idea what I'm doing with this one.)

The Land Beneath The Sky
- _ - _ - _
[iambic trimeter]

Echoes of the past decry [rhyme] [only the first letter capitalized, like the poem in the tomb]
_ - - - _ - _
trochee anapest iamb

A Lost Love Carried On
- _ _ _ - _
bacchius cretic
[switch to dimeter?]

Words to a Lonely Song [assonance]
_ - - _ - _
dactyl cretic
OR stressed syllable, anapest, iamb?

Everyone Must Bleed
_ - - _ _
dactyl spondee

Truth Hides Nothing [slant assonance?]
_ _ _ -
spondee trochee
OR molossus, unstressed syllable?

Kind of interesting, not really sure what use it has though.
And the Lord said unto John, "Come forth and receive eternal life." But John came fifth and won a toaster.
