I was going to make a new topic about this, but then I realized it would basically just be this topic again, so screw that.

Anyway, The Way is now 10 years old!

I had a hell of a time trying to track down a date for this one. Earliest evidence I could find for EP1's release was July 2002 so that's good enough for me. In retrospect I could have probably just posted here asking if anyone knew and saved myself a lot of trouble, but where's the fun in that?

So yeah, 10 years. Maybe Lun would like to say a few words? (Ha!) For those of you who have been here since the beginning you can pick up your "Rhue Award For Not Being Able to Move On" on the way out. For everyone else I managed to find what I guess was a really early title screen for EP1:

So this would be the part I guess where we reminisce about The Way and the forums, except oops, already did that. So uhhh... what next?

Hey I think I remember that title screen!

Anyway, the precise release date of Episode 1 has always been one of those things I think I've tried to figure out about a hundred times. I know I first played it when it was posted to rpg2knet, and I'm sure if I looked through millions of lines of chat logs or thousands of forum posts, I know at one point I had noted what date that actually was (rpg2knet being kind of broken these days). Previously I could've almost swear I played it April/May of 2001, but judging from what I discovered below, I was about a year and a month off, though now that I think about it, I do remember playing it at the start of summer/when school was getting out, between 8th and 9th grade.

I decided to do the really unscientific method of looking at the modified dates of various files in the Episode 1 download, and here's some facts:
  • Episode 1's RPG_RT exe was created 5/28/2000.
  • Though a lot of the maps were updated and have their date thrown off, a large grouping of them were modified throughout 2001.
  • Some of the original resources seem to have been created throughout 2000
  • Similar groups appear for 2004 (which is probably when the title screen was updated) and 2006
  • A lot of the image files were converted to .xyz files seemingly on 6/15/2002, so maybe it does seem to be a July 2002 release.

So yeah, I'm going to say July 2002.

File creation dates were one of my ideas as well. (Also using dates from older versions of EP1 that I pulled off of archive.org) But still on its own they don't mean much to me since Lun could have done things in many different orders before release. My main method was using archive.org on every old rm2k site I could think of and see what came of it. (Because of course there's a huge gap in data for crestfallen's own site from like may 02 until sometime after ep4 was out. Its like someone doesn't want us to find out!) Eventually sky tower games of all sites came through with ep1 dated July.

I didn't check rpg2knet.com though! Apparently over the years that and rm2kworld.net merged in my head. From that site I've found that Lun created his account on the site June 30th. The staff review for the game is dated July 10th, and then a lot of the user reviews are on the 11th. So the 10th might just be our date, and if not we're certainly got a tight range.

Another thing I ran into for everyone to enjoy, The Way's definition on urban dictionary:
A crappy game. Take the graphics from Pong, the action of Risk and the storyline of Naughts and Crosses, and you have a game ten times better than this petty excuse for a game.
"Oh God, this game is so bad, I would rather cut my own appendix out with a rusty spoon than bear any more of this torture. It's so bad. It should crawl back into the sewers like the piece of shit that it is."

Whoever wrote that was clearly suffering from a rageboner at the time.

I've actually seen weird little obscure backhanded swipes like this at The Way in various places a few other times, mostly in other RPG Maker games. I think I subconsciously just assume it's Ryan's doing all the time.

Or maybe it was this douche. Reading his first post is actually a pretty good laugh, since it so perfectly exemplifies that overambitious premature load-blowing that the RPG Maker community is known for. He even has an ultra cunt name "Invisionary"; it's almost too perfect. The sad thing is it looked like we were actually willing to play ball with him for a bit there. I'm pretty sure I knew exactly how it was going to turn out, but I think I played along just so he would be less annoying.

I know when we (or maybe it was just me) actually did start brushing him off, he pretty much exposed his dickishness (so to speak), and I think I had to block him on AIM because he kept trying to flame me or something like that.

I see now his grand master plan wiki hasn't been updated since 2007. You know, if I'm ever having a really bad day, I can always take solace in the fact that I was always right about predicting everything in the RPG maker community. And I'm 100% sure the exact same thing would've happen even if we actually did everything he asked.

So yeah, going back to the random Way hate out there, I guess it could be ANYONE in the RPG maker community. Because if there's one thing I've noticed, it's that people who've never actually finished a game (and I don't mean the random hobby games most of us have worked on at some point, I mean shit with 15 minute demos and a hundred screenshots posted on GamingW) are typically tremendously jealous of and extremely butthurt over games that actually finished. I think that's where a lot of the hate come from, since The Way is 6 finished games.

I need to make an actual game in RPG Maker at some point. I had quite a few half-finished games lying around that I eventually deleted in a cold-blooded reptillian rage since I would end up continuously revising them realising they weren't good enough. I am currently planning on re-making Amnesia in RPG Maker at some point to get myself re-familiarised with game making, and also to shore up my game making abilities. I think the most technical thing I ever did was start working on a custom menu system that allowed for a party change ability, but, as usual, it wasn't even half-way done before I deleted it in a cold-blooded reptillian rage. Of course, the benefit of waiting until now to make an RPG Maker game is that I am an adult now, and so don't have bullshit delusion of becoming the uber RM2K/3 god or whatever delusions I had when I first learnt of RPG Maker. I also have much better ideas than simply basing characters, plot, and setting on shit that happened in my life.

I imagine a lot of it is people hearing how great something is over and over, usually develop one or two mindsets. One, that they are better than the 'hivemind' and are sure the game can't be good. Eventually work themselves into the mindset that the game is going to be god awful before they play it. Then they try it for 10 minutes, cherry pick any thing they can to prove their preconceived point, and then gloat about how bad they knew it was all along. Alternatively, they get so overhyped about the game, they basically expect the game to bring them to orgasm. Naturally they are very hurt and angered when it doesn't.To quote prime time sitcoms: “If someone hasn't seen The Karate Kid, you don't say, 'It's the greatest movie ever.' You say, 'Uh, it's pretty good,' because then when they see it, it will blow their mind!" There's actually like two or three negative definitions for the game on that site, all by people who made accounts just to insult The Way. I find this hilarious.

Sorry to backtrack a bit, (since you are talking about The Way's reception) but I found myself dying to play this again (I think I played through all of it again like a year or two ago though, so it hasn't been that long). I also specifically remember a lot of the early(-ish) days of the forum. I even remember being an immature douche myself, and making quite a long flame discussion about leaving. I was probably worse than Teenr0cker in the end there.

Later on I returned as [Gaius] to post some of my thoughts on a later playthrough (and fearing being remembered haha). Puberty has done me well though. The one thing I hate about Lun's website are his lack of updates (6th June I think is the most recent) and I really miss the whole "wondering what he was up to" nostalgia.

Remember when Mob Pixelle came around and redid like half of The Way's facesets? Or should I say created new ones for previously faceless characters. That was probably my most active time... and although I wasn't here for the beginning, it was exciting watching The Way's re-release (I think it was 2006).
