Are there answers?

Postby Kcrazy » Fri Jun 06, 2025 10:23 am

What it been, nearly 20 years? I still often think back on this game and wonder about the deeper mysteries. I still love the ending, all three actually, but I always want more lore, more information on the time line. I would love to know more of Rhues more dominate auras.

But what i really wan to know, is there more? How deep is the glacier, how much of this is plotted backwards. Are the answers, or is it pointless to even hypothesize.

I already have my headcanon (forgive me for getting names and terms wrong, it's been a hot minute since my last playthrough):

  • Chasta is Scatha, and is Serena's older sister. Slade is their brother, and he & their mother are the reason Scatha is maimed and dropped into the pits.
  • Strata is Scatha's ex-boyfriend and is the reason her mother maimed her. He also dumped her after she was maimed, which is why she's so bitter. This is why Slade recognises him at the start of the game.
  • Cetsa and Kloe encountered each other when they were younger shortly after the Landorin Massacre, whereupon they found Serena's pendant and fought over it - Cetsa nearly killing Kloe by pushing her into the river until Traziun saves her.

(From here on, my details are going to get a bit more sketchy because I'm terrible at remembering episode 6 names & other details)
  • Rhue is the legendary Mimic. He has been many notable people throughout history, including Kava (or was it kura? I'm sure it's kava).
  • Originally, Rhue was the son of... someone important (I'd need to re-check the lore)... in the pits... Which would explain why he's so long lived. He's not necessarily human, but has been "redeemed" and walks the way now after betraying the depths (or by being converted by the sword?)
  • The shadow figure that Rhue fights in the depths is either: a sibling/member of his original race, or the spirit of the sword that Scatha is chasing after (similar to the final boss of episode 6 in the regular ending). It makes the screaming (?) sound that other sword-spirits make when defeated (as seen after Rhue plunges Slade in Ep5).
  • Rhue has killed a lot of people and a lot of things. This includes at least one legendary monster from the depths (I forgot the name, sorry), which end up being the final boss of the depths path.
  • A large part of the power stored in his sword was used to seal the soul of that monster, which is why you have to defeat the four shadow plungers (the guardians/seals?) before the seal breaks and you can descend into the depths contained within the sword.
  • I assume the taint coming from this sealed beast is why rhue's sword is so hyper-aggressive - it still tries to follow a righteous path and enforce adhering to The Way, but it's a bit too trigger-happy now.
  • The sword decides which personality Rhue adopts based on its determination to continue on The Way and roam. Once Rhue's current personality fulfills its reason to travel the way, he assumes a new identity (e.g. Midian fulfilled his goal of killing Jeruh; so now Rhue must become Jeruh (Rhue) in order to find Serena - a powerful motivator due to the fact that she's already dead).
  • This would also mean the the depths ending involves Rhue unsealing all of his power and conquering/embracing the power of that monster - which is why he turns his back on his companions, with his sword slaying each of them since each of them is trying to remove his reason for continuing on the way by telling him that Serena is dead.
  • This culminates in Rhue being powerful enough to kill both Gaius and Traziun, as well as absorb the final part of Slade, which is why we see them at the end - they've been absorbed into the sword, where Rhue talks to them about love... because he's still seeking Serena, who he believes he loves, and thus walking the way (or being dead alongside Gaius/Traziun).

Not that I'd decline hearing the definitive truth from Lun, of course.
