You misunderstood me, or you were trying to make fun, either way. the letters symbolize spots on a sheet.

with three you can only connect them ina few ways, with a myriad you can connect in too many ways. Especially if you connect everything. Then you will onyl see a mishmash of lines, not able to see the intendet pattern.

What is "evil"?

Postby Vicious » Mon Apr 10, 2006 2:13 pm

You must realize that good and evil are matters of perspective they don't truly exist as one might say because all good and evil are is labels for a behavior pattern determined by the person labeling the type of behavior. You might think I am evil because I believe in a Facist govt. but others might not think I am evil and some might even think I am good this is one reason why scientology is becoming popular in fact because when I asked a priest what sin was he said "evil" or "bad" behavior that isn't accepted by JC however I might believe that punching that kid in the face (or whatever scenario you want) was a good action. Thus for any one being to proclaim something good or evil is immpossible due to the matter of perspective.

The problem is that good and evil are defined term on The Way. More like, evil is. The Lord Below is evil: He is out to curropt people's hearts, take control of the world by controlling the Wanderers, etc etc. There is no such thing as a Purpose, but that's not to say there's another, good deity.

The Way, has complicated as the plot is, isn't as complicated as real life. Good and evil have defined terms, who we place under those catagories... Well, aside from the obvious targets, that's an open issue.

yes this is what I was trying to get at it's all well and good for a Jewish person to put Hitler under the evil catagory but what about those who actually liked him and believed his ways? They would put him under the good catagory.

As far as The Way is concerned Rhue is not good or evil because his goal is to find his love right? or at least who he thought was Serena but his actions only dictate his self interest I think that Rhue being neutral was not too heavily influenced by the swords evil IF the sword really is evil because in the game I think it was Traziun who said there is no way a sword could be evil perhaps the one who weilds it maybe gets corrupted?

Curropted, tranced, has his emotions amplified... Same thing, really. Rhue was neutral, but the Sword turned his despair and anxiety into weapons it can use when it needs to absorb Auras. Who knows, maybe the Sword's view of Justice is decided by the wielder? Jeruh saw everyone, including Serena who he followed and did things for without fail, joke at him. That seemed so very wrong, and the Sword thought: 'This is terrible! JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED!' and got Jeruh on his killing spree, turning the Landorin Massacare into an all-you-can-eat buffet for the Sword, too. Likewise for Rhue. All the people who bugged him, it just seemed like those people have to pick on him just when he's at his lowest. The sword sees this as injusice, and wham, goes crazy. 'Evil fears us greatly', when Rhue draws his sword and gets ready to shish kebob people, they obviously freak out and get scared.

Hmm... it seems all the characters in the game fit the "evil" side much better than the "good" side. I wonder if that has any meening.

Doesn't change the fact that the simple definitions are still imposed on us.

In real life, I'd more than agree. But this isn't real life- this is a video game! Video games are a lot more simplistic in that view. You DO have a defined view of good and evil, like Sephiroth and Kefka being evil, and Squall and Cloud are good (Though insane). The Lord Below is evil, but is Kalmar evil? Is Strata evil? Is Scatha evil? Is Rhue\Mimic evil? These sorts of question. While we don't have a direct definition of a good character, we have a definition of an evil character, that is, the Lord Below.

The Way is one of the greatest original intellectual master pieces of this age, I would not ever call it shallow enough to have "good and evil".

Good and evil are just the names of the sides, Nothing more. It is a very strong theme in The Way and I am suprised you have not noticed it

Good and evil are names of the sides, but there's the thing: For us to feel antagonism or admiration for characters, they need to be spread out across a certain grid of how good or bad they are. Think of it like in D&D: You have Neutral, Lawful and Chaotic for either side.

Again, it's an incredible game, for but all it's genius, for it to be a made-up fantasy story it HAS to have defined good and evil.

Forgive me, But I do not see any logic in your words. Would you mind attempting to show me where does this statement originates from?

And mind you, In D&D when you make a character even slightly more complicated then "His mother has been murdered by orcs, he's out for reveng" the system falls apart. It is made for mindless hack N' slash, Not for story telling

Of course D&D's aren't exactly good plot-wise, but they allow your character to be broken up into somewhat good, madly evil, or just plain neutral. Evil, in my regard, is someone who does things out of malice just for the sake of being malicous. The Lord Below seems to somehow fit that, hence he's evil in my regard.

Also, the statement that good and evil are just tags and don't truly exist outside of our preception is very true for real life. But The Way isn't real life. The plot can be very complicated and even be built upon this idea, but Lun made at least the division of evil and everything else. You have the Lord Below and his lessers, who are minions of hell who try to curropt the hearts of Wanderers just for the sake of doing evil things (As far as we know). Perhaps it's merely their purpose, I woulden't know, but it's quiet obvious that the Lord Below is evil, from all we know right now. Or are you going to say that the Lord Below is a beneveolent ruler who gives away free fudge to the Lessers every monday and friday? The Lord Below alone is proof that Lun attempted to make the seperation of good and evil, or at least the seperation of evil from everything else.

Thats the point

The Lord Below does not acts the way he does just because "he's evil". Think of it, Everything in The Way has a logical purpose. The Lord Below was tagged as evil because he belongs to a side dubbed "evil". When you look at the so called "Good guys" they are just as horrible, The reason they are called "good" is because they are fighting the Lord Below.

Tezel has lied to the Wanderers about everything, How can we know if the lord below is truly what we hear of in the game? Remember, The characters in the game are realistic, And thus, They can be wrong.

And a good creation should be as realistic within its limits as the real world, And I call The Way a master peice.

I call it a masterpiece, too. But the real world wasn't concieved in a human mind, the real world doesn't have such a definition. A human mind does, and the creation suffers from that. Also, think of it: The good guys are horrible, the Lord Below could actually be completely opposed to Tetzel's descriptions: Doesn't that mean the so called 'bad guys' are good guys, and the so called 'good guys' are bad guys? You've definetly stated the latter. The world in a video game is a lot more simplistic than the real world, because it was crafted in a human mind. In a video game there are only the sinners who are judged, and the victims who do the judging. Lun is a genius-but is human like us all. His mind isn't immune to the human tendency to divide things into good and evil.
